The first episode of Game of Thrones is titled “Winter is Coming” and it sets the stage for the epic fantasy drama series.
The episode opens with an introduction to the Stark family who live in the North of the fictional land of Westeros. Lord Eddard Stark, also known as Ned, is the head of the Stark family and the lord of Winterfell. The episode starts with him executing a deserter from the Night’s Watch, an ancient order tasked with protecting the realm from mysterious and dangerous creatures beyond the Wall.
We are then introduced to the Lannisters, a powerful and wealthy family from the South who are in the process of visiting Winterfell. During their stay, we learn that the current King, Robert Baratheon, is coming to Winterfell to ask Ned to become his chief advisor, a position known as the Hand of the King. This sets off a chain of events that will change the lives of the characters forever
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Narrow Sea, we are introduced to Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of the former King. She is living with her abusive brother Viserys, who is determined to regain the throne for their family. Daenerys is married off to Khal Drogo, the leader of a powerful tribe of horse riders, in exchange for his army’s support in their quest to take back the Iron Throne.
Throughout the episode, we also see glimpses of supernatural elements, including a group of undead creatures and three dragon eggs that are given to Daenerys as a wedding gift.
Overall, the first episode of Game of Thrones sets up the complex political landscape and introduces the main characters of the series, while also hinting at the magical and supernatural elements that will come into play later on. It serves as an excellent introduction to the world of Westeros and sets the stage for the epic story that is to come.
